Cefalù is a coastal town on Sicily’s northern shore, set between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the steep slopes of La Rocca, the large limestone outcrop that rises directly behind the historic center. Its old town is arranged around narrow stone streets leading toward Piazza Duomo, while a sandy beach stretches beside the settlement below the town walls. The combination of a compact historic core, prominent mountain, and seafront gives Cefalù a distinctive physical setting.

Located roughly in the center of the country, Riobamba is one of Ecuador's largest cities and the starting point of the scenic train ride to Nariz del Diablo (Devil's Nose). The city has a strong indigenous presence, which lends itself well to the open-air artisan market, and plenty of opportunities for mountainous activities such as hiking and mountain biking.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park lies in the Texas Panhandle near Canyon, protecting a section of Palo Duro Canyon, often called the “Grand Canyon of Texas.” The canyon stretches through the surrounding High Plains, with layered rock walls, mesas, buttes, and dry grasslands creating a landscape distinct from most of Texas.

If you find yourself in Rotterdam, there's a strong chance you've arrived by water. This popular port city (the second largest in the Netherlands) has gone through an architectural renaissance since World War II, with daring, innovative structures dotting the city (cube houses!) and defining its skyline. Café culture is on the rise here, so grab yourself a table and a cup.

Together with neighboring Glacier National Park in the United States, Waterton Lakes National Park is part of the world's first international Peace Park, which was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1955. The Waterton-Glacier Peace Park protects an important biological crossroads where the Rocky Mountains reach their narrowest width. Waterton's bedrock is much older than that of the mountains to the north found in Jasper and Banff.
